What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)? The Quick Version
AEO in about three minutes. What it is, how it differs from SEO, and the three questions to ask about every page you care about.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is making your website easy for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews to find, read and cite. It isn't a replacement for SEO. It's SEO with extra attention on one thing, a clear answer that's easy to quote.
Key Takeaways
- AEO means making your site easy for AI assistants to find, read and cite.
- It builds on SEO. Google says AI Overviews need no special optimization beyond normal best practices.
- Ask three questions of every page: can crawlers get in, can they read the words, is there an answer worth quoting?
- Track results in Search Console, Bing's AI Performance report and a GA4 AI assistants channel.
Remember when searching meant typing "best pizza near me" and scrolling ten blue links? Plenty of people now just ask, in full sentences, and get a written answer back. That answer has to come from somewhere. Often it comes from websites, and the assistant shows a few of them as sources.
AEO is the work of being one of those sources.
So It's Just SEO With a New Name?
Mostly, yes, and that's good news. Google says there are no special requirements for appearing in its AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO best practices. If your pages are crawlable, indexed and genuinely useful, you're already most of the way there.
The difference is emphasis. Classic SEO thinks about ranking a whole page. AEO thinks about the one paragraph an assistant could lift out and repeat. It also cares about more readers: alongside Googlebot, you've got crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity, and many of them don't run JavaScript.
Three Questions to Ask About Any Page
- Can a crawler get in?Nothing in robots.txt, your firewall or your host is turning AI search crawlers away.
- Can it read the words? The main text is in the page's HTML, not only painted in later by JavaScript or trapped in an image.
- Is there an answer worth quoting? The page states its answer early, in plain language, with real specifics.
If you can say yes to all three, you're in good shape. If one is a no, that's your to-do list.
Is This Worth a Small Team's Time?
Usually, yes. Assistants answer specific questions, and specific questions are where small businesses and specialists shine. "What does a furnace tune-up include and how long does it take?" is a question your HVAC page can answer better than a giant directory site.
Google has also said that visitors who click through from AI Overviews tend to be higher quality and spend more time on the site. Fewer clicks, better clicks.
How Do I Know If It's Working?
You can't see everything yet, but you can see a lot:
- Google Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the regular Web performance report.
- Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report showing how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages.
- Google Analytics 4 can split out visits from assistants into their own channel. Here's how to set that up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need special files or code for AI assistants?
Not for Google. It says you don't need special schema, AI text files or new machine-readable files to show up in its AI features. A clean sitemap and readable HTML matter more.
What should I fix first?
Access. A brilliant page that crawlers can't load is invisible. Start with robots.txt, then check whether your text survives without JavaScript.
